Taiwanese director Chung Mong-Hong's careful blend of buddy pic and gangster flick follows petty criminal Na Dow as he carries high-grade heroin from Taipei to South Taiwan for crime boss Ah Bao. The job is very simple and rather boring—until one fateful day when he hails a taxi driven by Old Xu (played by Hong Kong comedy legend Michael Hui), who won't stop talking to Na Dow about the meaning of life. When the odd couple gets caught in a bloody conflict between two gangs, they must work together to stay out of the line of fire—even as Ah Bao searches for revenge in its aftermath.
Chung skillfully takes advantage of Hui's star persona to create rapid-fire dialogue that adds dark humor to what is ultimately a crime thriller about the nature of chance and fate.
