Overview

Having grown up in the supposedly liberated Denmark of the 1990s, Venus co-directors Mette Carla Albrechtsen and Lea Glob felt motivated to make a film that explored the concerns and frustrations of women in the post–sexual revolutionary era. Considering that history is viewed almost solely through the eyes of men and that the Internet has further transformed the way we look at ourselves, they wanted to know, what sort of perspective do women have on their identities as sexual beings?

So they announced an open casting call for an erotic film based on real-life sexual experiences. But when 100 women showed up to audition, things took a curious turn, one that would begin to upend the old trope of the casting couch. The resulting documentary—by turns humorous, confrontational and deeply philosophical—asks more questions than it can answer, but it is also a rare portrait of young women grappling with both their vulnerability and their power in society as they try to reconcile desire with responsibility.
