Set against the breathtaking grandeur of the East Fjords region of Iceland, this coming-of-age drama about the emotional and sexual awakening of two teenagers is distinguished by the sensitive performances first-time writer-director Gudmundur Arnar Gudmundsson draws from his young cast.
Thor and Kristjan are best friends, roaming the desolate open spaces of their homeland, catching fish and wasting time when not dealing with their dysfunctional families. Despite outwardly boorish behavior, the two boys share an obvious tenderness toward one another. When the younger boy, Thor, makes halting romantic overtures toward a local girl, Kristjan tries to follow suit, attempting in vain to court her friend—but soon his true feelings for Thor himself are revealed. As the unforgiving Icelandic winter approaches, the boys struggle to come to terms with the revelation.
