Danny Houck is a young eccentric from the backwaters of Ohio who meets a renowned European concert violinist online and convinces him that he can make a perfect copy of the Stradivarius Il Cannone, otherwise known as the most famous violin that ever existed—despite the fact that he has no formal training in the art of violin making, nor has he ever set foot in Cremona, Italy, where Antonio Stradivari lived and worked. (Heck, he's never been outside of his home state.) Now he's fighting time, poverty and his own foibles as he attempts to deliver on his brash promise in time for an important concert.
At once hilarious, touching and gripping in the vein of American Movie and Lost in La Mancha, this documentary from violinist-turned-filmmaker Stefan Avalos follows Houck in a quest for glory that will move you to cheers—and even tears.
