This simultaneous portrait of an artist, geopolitical chronicle and love story follows Iranian musician Shahin Najafi as he flees to Germany after hardline clerics put a $100,000 bounty on his head, incensed by a rap song about religious oppression. Documentarian Till Schauder (The Iran Job, DFF35) traces Najafi's transformation from the talented Koran reciter he was in his youth to his current predicament as an outlaw whose every concert is an assassination risk.
A study in remarkable bravery, Najafi's gripping saga crosses several continents and cultures, turning into a modern-day Romeo and Juliet when he falls for Leily Bazargan, whose grandfather was handpicked by the Ayatollah Khomeini to be the first Prime Minister of the Islamic Republic of Iran. Beyond his fight for freedom of speech, Najafi now faces another life-threatening dilemma: How can he build a life with a woman whose family represents the very regime that's calling for his death?
