Adapted from a novel by French director Dominique Cabrera, this tale of summer love gone wrong follows three teenagers in crime-ridden Marseilles.
Suzanne, a shy middle-class girl who ought to be studying for exams, falls in with a bunch of thrill-seeking Arab youths who spend their time daring each other to leap off rocks into the sea. Timid at first, she joins in, soon enjoying the attentions of both Marco and Mehdi. But as the trio grows close, the bleakness of the boys' lives is revealed. Suddenly things turn dangerous: one of them is mixed up with drugs. Choices have to be made.
Cabrera herself was pushed out of her native Algeria and plunged into a new life in France as a child; her sensitivity to the plight of the stranger, the outsider, shines through as she thrillingly captures both the hijinks of adolescence and the tensions of race and class in present-day Europe.
