Employing impressive cinematic techniques and anchored by a tour-de-force performance from newcomer Mariam Al Ferjani, Beauty and the Dogs tackles a painful but urgent subject head on in a starkly emotional drama based on real-life events. In the process, Tunisian filmmaker Kaouther Ben Hania also issues a striking critique on a repressive society and a forcefully feminist rallying cry.
Mariam is a young Tunisian woman who is raped by police officers after leaving a party. Over the course of one long and terrible night, she is put in the harrowing position of fighting for her rights against her tormentors—who just so happen to have the law on their side.
