Ex Libris – The New York Public Library, takes the audience behind the scenes of one of the greatest knowledge institutions of the world. The New York Public Library is accessible, open to everyone and exemplifies the deeply rooted American belief in the individual's right to know and be informed. It is one of the most democratic institutions in our society – everyone is welcome. The film examines how this legendary institution sustains its traditional activities while adapting to the digital revolution. Ex Libris – The New York Public Library shows that libraries inform and educate patrons in a multitude of ways- books, concerts, lectures, classes, and more. The Library strives to inspire learning, advance knowledge and strengthen communities.
In short, Fred's film is a love letter to the one institution that levels the playing field of access to knowledge for all, something we so dearly need to hold on to in these times. It is so much more than a depository of books, but rather, an essential part of each and every community in helping to greater connect with the world in which we live.
"MAGNIFICENT... a documentary that builds with intellectual force and deep emotion as it shows, again and again, citizens — interested, questioning, seeking — joining together to listen to one another and to learn from one another. In Ex Libris, democracy is alive and in the hands of a forceful advocate and brilliant filmmaker, which helps make this one of the greatest movies of Mr. Wiseman’s extraordinary career and one of his most thrilling."
