Meet Michelle, a feisty, bright young woman who is legally blind and has a mildly intrusive case of Asperger’s. She’s stuck in Bangor, Maine, with her splintered family and her collection of manga dolls. But as she approaches 21, she feels more than ready to discover herself and to confront the challenges of independent life—“the good, the bad and the ugly” of what awaits her, as she aptly puts it.
In this perceptive documentary, Garrett Zevgetis follows Michelle as she graduates from the Perkins School for the Blind, explores a sexual relationship and embarks on a life-changing move to Los Angeles. Along the way, her sensory limitations and increasing frustrations become apparent in bursts of impassioned exposition that contrast with Zevgetis’s narrow, color-saturated depth of field. But ultimately, Best and Most Beautiful Things is an empowering celebration of outcasts everywhere who share the will to confront the “uncensored world” and to discover communities that might sustain them.
