Adapted from Edward Albee's astounding, Tony-winning 1962 play, this journey into the hell of a stormy marriage blazes with powerhouse performances by Elizabeth Taylor, Sandy Dennis, Richard Burton and George Segal.
The storyline is simple —a burned-out professor (Burton) and his seductive yet volatile wife (Taylor) let their personal demons fly to battle it out in front of, and eventually with, the unsuspecting, mild-mannered guests they’ve invited over for a drink (Dennis and Segal). The mood is anything but, veering back and forth between white-knuckle suspense, black comedy and every shade of tragedy.
Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? was nominated for 13 Academy Awards, including Best Actor, Actress, Supporting Actor, Supporting Actress, Picture and Director (Mike Nichols); it won five, with Taylor, Dennis and legendary cinematographer Haskell Wexler all taking home Oscars.
