In their rousing first feature documentary, Joanna Sokolowski and Kate Trumball-LaValle, turn their lens on the Ovarian Psycos, a collective of women of color from the east side of Los Angeles determined to claim space on their rough city streets.

Following several key figures—including founder, activist and poet Xela de la X and Evie, the group’s newest member—the film tells the story of how the group was founded, what it does to support its members and how its brand of female empowerment affects its community. Captivating cinematography shows what a rebellious act it can be for women to ride.

Heartbreaking and inspiring, Ovarian Psycos makes a fascinating complement to another documentary in this year’s festival, Check It; both illuminate distinct approaches to gender- and identity-based violence, discrimination and ultimately liberation. In the words of the Ovas, “We’ve got nothing to lose but our chains.”
