Overview

Emerging filmmaker and photographer Francesco Carrozzini spent four years filming this documentary portrait of his mother Franca Sozzani, the controversial editor of Vogue Italia, to better understand her personal life and her work in fashion. Filming many of their conversations (and arguments) in the car on her way to work—or what he calls “our confessional”—Carrozzini hones in on Sozzani’s signature efforts to turn pressing social and political issues into backdrops for magazine spreads, be it domestic violence, the 2010 BP oil spill, plastic surgery or race (which produced a groundbreaking, best-selling issue featuring only black models). Subversive art or exploitation? It depends on whom you ask.

Indeed, commentary from Karl Lagerfeld, Baz Luhrmann, philosopher Bernard-Henri Lévy and others ranges from adoring to appalled. Sozzani herself expects no less; her remarkable self-awareness and poise shines through every scene, revealing just how a working mother in 1970s Italy came to be a fashion-industry legend, tackling provocative topics through haute couture.
