Begnning in the dark urban territory of film noir and then bursting into a stormy countryside, Johnny Ma’s remarkable debut feature centers on a classic tragic figure in the form of taxi driver Lao Shi, who naively insists on taking a righteous path through a society inured to cruelties sanctioned by the Chinese state.
After an accidental collision with a motorcyclist, the cabbie takes on the responsibility of getting the victim to the hospital and paying his ongoing bills. Berated for his stubbornness and pride, in danger of losing his livelihood and his family, Lao Shi (played with quiet anger by Chen Gang) comes to understand the corrupt, dehumanizing system he’s up against—and begins to pursue justice with increasing fervor against a bleak backdrop that foreshadows his extreme solution to his troubles.
