Tobias Nölle’s engrossing psychological drama starts as titular character Aloys Adorns is taking over the family private-detective business after the death of his father. The middle-aged gumshoe leads a solitary life, snubbing neighbors while obsessively viewing surveillance videos he makes by the dozen. Then his camera is stolen.
Enter Vera, a mysterious stranger who blackmails him over the phone: she’ll expose his voyeuristic habits unless he tries “the Japanese technique of phone-walking.” Soon, he has abandoned his real life for a parallel one. But what happens when his two lives converge? Nölle asks us to consider just how far technology can insert itself into our consciousness before it’s no longer ours.
