When Fountain, Colorado, parents Jeremy and Kathryn Mathis realized their son Coy was identifying as a girl, they did everything they could to be supportive. But when Coy started first grade, her school was not as understanding—they insisted she use the boys’ or adults’ bathroom. The Mathises took legal action, filing a suit with the Colorado Civil Rights Division, and suddenly Coy was at the center of an international fracas over the case for transgender equality—one that went all the way to the Supreme Court.
Documentary Eric Juhola (Off the Grid: Life on the Mesa, DFF30) captures the strain that such enormous scrutiny put on the family as they struggled to balance everyday life with their obligations as inadvertent spokespeople for the transgender movement.
